unstable part of the storm moves on shore. the winds are certainly picking up at this hour. throughout the next hour, hour and a half, it's going to start to get very busy around here. that means right in the midst of your morning drive. plenty of time to reach your destination safely. we've got two more very strong storm systems on the way to the bay area. five to six consecutive days of rain. and we're going to watch this storm progress as we head throughout the morning. stick with us and we will show you. as this system moves on shore and the major changes comes to the bay area. 5:00 a.m. straight up. let's check on your morning drive with mike. >> we're looking at the freemont camera. christina's talking about the wind. we'll look at that through the morning. full screen, as we see the camera's been shaking a lot. this is over at the truck scales. this is the long et break we saw in the wind. 880 just past the truck scales.

the rain having passed through earlier might be enough to make the conditions a little wet. still smooth coming out of the interchange. back to you. >> all right, mike. we know this morning's commute will be anything but typical. rain and win coud could make fo longer commute. bob rydell with a look at what you'll see as you head throughout the door. >> reporter: we're heading north, trying to make our way up the peninsula, where we think road conditions could be some of the worst for the morning commute. clearly right now it's very nice. we can see -- it's probably hard for you to see through the camera, but we can see on the horizon what looks like storm clouds. maybe within the next 30 minutes we'll arrive to where it's going to be bad weather. as far as the wind conditions now, a little windy in the south bay. nothing to write home to mom about. according to the national weather service, they have put a wind advisory in effect until

11:00 this morning. clearly, it's going to be running throughout the entire commute. it's going to be the peninsula, you know, they're saying they'll have winds 30 to 40 miles an hour. san francisco, another area that's going to be hard hit. south bay not as much according to the national weather service. and in the east bay, interior valley, so we'll talk about the trivalley. some 20 to 30 miles an hour, gusting up to around 50 miles an hour. so it looks like the big story this morning, wet roads, which we don't have yet, and winds. something you want to keep an eye out for. bob rydell, "today in the bay." >> the wind also playing a major role. the wind advisory in effect on all bay area bridges this morning. gusts up to 50 miles an hour.

even more, could catch drivers out there a little bit off guard. christy smith with a look at the weather conditions. >> reporter: good morning to you. we have had just a couple of sprinkles in the east bay. daily city, it was starting to sprinkle there, but nothing significant. we're right by the bay bridge toll plaza. normally when it's raining, you see the puddles. drivers going right through it. i think someone said it earlier, if you could leave now, we could certainly feel it in the air this morning. the wind advisory signs are not lit up yet, but you can feel the pull, at least on the san francisco side of the bridge. i spoke with the chp this morning and they're waiting for the weather to move in. they expect those advisory signs to go up very soon. they're showing it's not real

senior whose body was found on the beach we're now finding out committed suicide. 16-year-old cathy qiu, the announcement was made this week. she was a senior at albany high school and lived in richmond. she disappeared and was found dead nearly a month later. police in the south bay looking for two rm ann armed ro caught on tape. at the jewelry store on university avenue in los gates. armed with semiautomatic handguns, they held employees at gunpoint before taking off with an undisclosed amount of jewelry. police are still looking for the man who shot at one of their officers. the man inside the car opened fire. the shots missed the er is but hit his car. officer fired back but the gunman got away. the car was later found abandoned. the officer is now on paid

administrative leave. meteorologist christina loren has been working very hard to track all this weather. >> the changes are just beginning. good morning to you, jon and laura. thanks for waking up with us. as we have pointed out, winds are going to pick up ahead of the front. as the front pulls out of the bay area, we have strong winds sustained in san jose at 18 miles per hour. east-southeast at 12 1/2 miles. the gusts are what could catch you off guard if you're headed over the open water bridges or the mountains. expect in the higher elevations up to 70 miles per hour. it's going to be a very dangerous commute. for most part, the lighter rain is still coming down. the heavier rain is off shore. it's just minutes away from places like half-moon bay. about 30 minutes away from san bruno. it will hit the east bay in about 50 minutes. get ready for that.

grab that umbrella, grab the jacket. ladies, don't even bother doing your hair today because it's not going to hold up. mostly cloudy conditions. we kick off your rush hour. that will continue until about 10:00 a.m. those wind advisories stay put till 11:00 a.m. we're going to see some partial breaks. we'll see partial sunshine out there. i think it's going to be mostly cloudy and kind of cool. we get our next heavy round of moisture tomorrow. wednesday, the most active time period. storm number two a rivals. heavy rain and wind. i think you'll be able to get out for a couple hours. and then the most significant, number three arrives saturday. this one's tapping into a atmospheric river, we call it a subtropical moisture tap, and we are expecting to get drenched. upwrpds of 7 inches of rain on

the way. let's see how the roads are doing. best time to leave right now. >> that's what we tell people anyway. we're looking over here to the bay bridge. in emeryville, camera is shaking from time to time. gusts across the bridge. those signs are not lit up. it's the fact that people who drive across the bridge tell us it's pretty windy. we get a look at the maps to show you the traffic is moving slowly on the approach. overall, pretty dry right now approaching the bay bridge. the green highlighted on the maps does show you where the earlier rain might have caused some weather conditions. coming out of the north bay into the east bay, the bridges move smoothly. there's a stall just north of that, but no problem. the san mateo bridge from east bay to the flat section, the

tail lights in the commute direction move smoothly. once you come off of that on to the peninsula side, light volume as well. there's the view. 5:09. getting home for christmas is going to cost more this year. >> we're already talking christmas. less than 30 days away. a live look at the i-80 interchange. a messy commute out there especially over the summit. we'll have a live report coming up. it's 34 days away, the fiscal cliff. we'll take a look at that. yahoo!'s melissa meyer talks out for the first time.

yahoo! ceo melissa meyer will meet with president obama today. >> although she did speak out for the first time at a fortune magazine event last night. fortune listed her in its most powerful women list. video here from the fortune event provided by the magazine to the "today" show. meyer is the youngest ceo in the fortune 500. she said her top three priorities are god, family and yahoo!. we're going to hear more about this. meyer will be meeting with the president as well, the leader this afternoon. google also busy in washington. bloomberg reports larry page, the ceo, has been meeting with federal trade commission as we get this much closer to what many see as antitrust. at question, does google use its search results to strengthen its own business interests.

for that and the rest of your news, we'll turn to bertha coombs at cnbc. >> good morning, scott. warren buffett right now on our squawk box program saying he thinks it's better that politicians don't negotiate the cliff in public. and certainly investors probably feel that way too. futures are slightly lower. the markets fell on tuesday after senate leader harry reid who said congress has made little progress on a budget deal to avoid a year-end fiscal cliff. it was really the tone, saying it's time to end the happy talk. that overshadowed positive reports on home prices and consumer confidence. this morning, we'll get data on new home sales and a report from the fed on regional economic conditions. the dow fell 89 points. the nasdaq losing nearly 9. if you're flying over the holidays, it's going to cost you

more. airfares expected to be about 5% higher than last year. if you leave on the saturday before christmas and return on the following saturday, the saturday discounts won't apply. your fare could be 27% higher. it's not deterring many people who are willing to pay higher prices. if up got somebody flying in, really appreciate them for that. meantime, orbitz says the saturday and sunday before christmas are likely to be very busy. the day after as well. they think you will pay less if you fly on christmas day. if you're working on wednesday after christmas, i suspect christmas day will be a lot of busy travel for folks trying to get back after the long weekend. nintendo was trumpeting it sold 400,000 of those new wii-u devices on its first weekend out. that was too much showing off for microsoft who said over the big selling weekend it sold 700,000 xboxes.

the current version of xbox has been around for seven years. nintendo, hey, we sold 400,000 of our brand-new machine. microsoft, yeah. >> the old my dad's tougher than your dad. >> rejected. >> yeah. >> all right, thanks, guys. >> competitive gaming world. 5:15. mother nature right now reigning -- or getting set to wreak havoc on us. >> a sloppy commute to work. we want to make sure you are aware. bundle them up, make sure they have rain gear. you want to make sure you're alert. the lighter rain is starting to arrive. i am noticing at this point some thunderstorm cells developing. you can see that within that batch of green. some little pockets of red and yellow. some could be strong. we're not expecting hail. the biggest components we are concerned with are the potential for some lightning and these thunderstorms alone will generate gusting winds. we already have sustained wins out there in excess of 20 miles

per hour. so travel cautiously. right now, your real-time doppler radar shows you, we've got the bulk of the moisture headed toward s montaro. if you can leave right now or anytime between now and the next hour, you're going to be better off than later on this morning. 18 miles per hour sustained right now in san jose. we had a sustained wind speed just moments ago of about 20 miles per hour. your future cast tells the story. this is your future cast for winds. that's all across the bay area as we head throughout the day, especially at 11:00 a.m. you want to keep that in mind. we could see trees go down. so power outages are possible. as we head throughout 3:00 is when they'll relax just a touch. from the first system alone, the bulk of the moisture comes

through between now and 2:00 p.m. 92, that is just short of an inch of rain from the first storm. so we're talking about a lot of rain on the way. then we have another system right on this one's heels. that's going to provide an additional two inches of rain. and then look at this, as we get into your weekend, the juiceiest system arrives. bringing your totals up to 7 inches. even san jose expecting over 4 inches. and here's the kicker. we're already close to average for this time of year when it comes to our rainfall totals. there's more rain on the way next week. so just make sure you're ready for that. grab the umbrella, stay alert. that way you know you're going to reach your destination safely. saturday into sunday, things start to change a little bit more. the second and third storm system. that's going to kick up. some of the highest surf that we've seen in possibly two

years. it is possible for the mavericks to happen. now, it's not likely but we're going to keep checking on that. the conditions have to be just perfect. but the surf is rather high. we'll get clearing out monday afternoon, and then the sunshine returns tuesday. the sun will come out on tuesday. mike, over to you. >> we're looking to the south bay. we're looking over here, 17. this is a change that's happened. north through san jose and the rest of the silicon valley, the traffic moving smoothly. the rain moving in about 20 minutes from now. southbound side, continues to show more and more slowing it heading down towards the summit. of course, we always have the warning for the drivers. 101 along the peninsula, a smooth drive as well. north of santa clara where bob showed us the conditions there. you might have some fog or at

least some mist and drizzle later on in the morning. in the next hour, we'll see big changes. on the east bay, we're looking at wind shaking the camera here. the flag right here blowing. pretty nicely here. it's picking up the volume a tad bit. pretty calm right now. watching for changes here. continuing up through oakland, past the coliseum. good volume but no slowing downtown. picking up the volume but still holding at the limit. past university. watching that rain and the effect on what's expected to be a tough commute, guys. back to you. live on the summit on highway 17 this morning with a check of the conditions there. >> good morning. i spoke to an officer who happened to pull into the parking lot here atop of the summit and he says so far all is quiet. no major problems to report at all. he says anticipation of this

morning's severe storm, that they are on heightened alert as far as chp officers are concerned and they're ready to step up patrols at any point in time. the bulk of the traffic we're seeing this morning, northbound 17, heading into san jose. and for the problems, the issue areas of concern for 17, if you're going to make your way out here this morning, we're talking about things like rock slide, mudslides. downed trees. but so far, that is not the case. in fact, it's just sprinkling, just a little bit on and off. we've been out here since before 4:30 this morning. no major problems as far as the rain goes. the wind tends to pick up every once in a while but so far that is relatively quiet as well. if you are heading out to the santa cruz mountains this morning, keep in mind, it is very dangerous out here, regardless of this storm that is coming in this morning. the speed limit is 55 miles per hour. live atop the summit, in the santa cruz mountain, marla

welcome back, everyone. take a live look outside from the south bay. we've got a pretty big storm system heading our way. wind speed's going to be up there as well. be careful on your morning commute. christina keeping track of all of it for us, as well as mike keeping his eye on the roadways. >> i think we heard you say it's like a river in the sky. >> yeah, that's for the third storm. we called it an atmospheric river. the subtropical moisture tap

comes into play saturday and sunday. that's when we're going to get the most rain, when our grounds are already saturated. the winds are really starting to pick up. south-southwest right now sustained at 12 miles per hour. half-moon bay, 18, san jose. gusts up to 40 miles per hour already. the bulk of the moisture is still off shore. you can see from your live satellite radar compilation. mostly moving along the peninsula. that's where the steady rain is picking up. showers moving from west to east as we head throughout the morning. the bulk comes through just in the heart of your morning drive. we're not going to be finished with it anytime soon. as showers and thunderstorms continue. as we head throughout the second half of tomorrow. here's what we're expecting. first storm moves in today. second storm moves in. that's packing a lot of moisture. then the third system, we are expecting that subtropical moisture trap. this morning, we have reporters

strategically placed throughout the bay area where we are expecting the worst conditions. we're going to show you those live as the storm system progresses. stick with us here on nbc bay area. mike also is all over your drive. >> we're looking over here to the foster city side of the san mateo bridge. over here, on our sky cam, that's not as high as the high rise there. that will be an issue as you're crossing the bay. watch for those gusty conditions. we'll show you the map starting on the east bay side. we do see hayward and the approach, the green now just hitting this area of the map. some sprinkles through the area. the forecast for the next half hour really change things. a little slowing for your commute direction for 580. the green indicating there may be some weather conditions. a little slowing coming into lir

more. back to you. >> tonight, thousands will gather in manhattan for the lighting of the rockefeller christmas tree. the spruce is much more than just a tree. it is set to be the symbol of strength for those who survived superstorm sandy. this year's tree comes from mount olive, new jersey. just a couple of weeks ago, crews cut down the 50-year-old tree from a yard. the storm left him with no power, knocking down two of the trees in his yard. but this spruce stood tall. it's now been decorated with more than 30,000 lights and popped with a crystal star to light up the sky from rockefeller center. look at all that. >> it's just great after everything, all the devastation we've been through, we can -- >> he says he hopes his tree can give joy to the thousands people who visit rockefeller center and those still struggling to recover from sandy.

severe weather is what we're following. a live look. there's a high wind warning in effect. drivers on all of the bay area bridges asked to use extra caution this morning. this is a view from our live camera atop the mountain. the camera getting tossed around. the gusts expected to reach 50 miles per hour, even higher in some places. >> the rain blanketed by storm clouds. >> glad you're inside keeping warm right now and dry. i'm jon kelley.

>> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we start with meteorologist christina loren tracking the storm for us. look at that radar. >> it is lit up like a christmas tree. 5:30 as you can see. up and down the peninsula, we're starting to get batches of light to moderate steady rainfall. you want to keep that in mind. your highways just now starting to get slick and we're expecting puddles and ponding. in addition to the very heavy rainfall at times, we're expecting a combination of gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms. the winds will be at their worst, same thing, right, during your morning drive. if you're headed over the mountains, headed over your open water bridges, you want to travel cautiously. we'll track this all morning long. 5:31. one minute later from the last time i told you the time. let's check on your drive. i do that too much sometimes. >> everybody cares, every second

counts in the morning, we all know that. the south bay, this is starting a little early, the burst of traffic. 101 at 680. maybe more people are leaving early. rolling through this area, you'll see some rain. already, the green creeping over. i've circled the area where the camera was. there may be some slick conditions developing. so we'll watch for that. we're getting a live look outside as well. this is approaching the bay bridge. traffic is fine. camera shakes quite a bit. there's been some gusty windy conditions. are those signs lit up yet? >> well, not just yet. the wind is picking up. i want to show you what it is we're dealing with. when we arrived 30 minutes ago, it was bone dry. then a cell moved through and it just started to rain. right now, it's not raining at

all. i want to show you what the tal plaza is looking like this morning. looking pretty good. still too early to get big pools of water. the cars that drive through them making a big splash this morning. chp telling me they will be lighting up wind warning signs soon. they're keeping an eye on things. i want to show you what the flags like like. the american flag, california flag. looking pretty good this morning. i also spoke with one of the toll takers. of course, the wind's expected to be about 50 miles an hour here. she said really the busy people on a day like this, the chp, also the tow truck drivers on the bay bridge, she said they have the busiest day at all. again, we're really feeling things start to change out here this morning. reporting live near the bay bridge toll plaza, christy smith, "today in the bay." >> drivers can expect a longer ride to work.

drivers trying to take it easy on the roads. "today in the bay's" bob rydell is our man on the road. where you at and where you headed? >> we're heading eastbound across dunbar. we're not on the incline yet. we just passed underneath the cal train sign. they do not have the high wind warnings up yet. we know the national weather service does have high wind advisories throughout the bay area. and actual warnings in some areas like san francisco. now, if you can hear the cross wind we're getting here, i would say it's definitely in the 20 to 30-mile-an-hour range. i do want to point out just how nice it is outside. you do have the wind. it's not super cold. right now, if you didn't know better, you wouldn't be able to tell there's a storm coming in. i can see the san mateo bridge

and the tower of the new bay bridge, the lights on that. if i look towards the sky, i can see the clouds. so you do know there is possibly something. the specific information we've been getting this morning from meteorologist christina loren. as we top the incline here, it's windy. it's not the type of wind that's going to push your car around, at least not yet. as we get maybe 30 minutes, those winds are going to make a difference. right now, it's not blowing our high-profile news van yet, so just something to keep in mind. reporting live, bob rydell. >> be careful out there, bob. in daily city, crews hope a hillside that collapsed two weeks ago will hold up in the coming rain. construction vehicles and hay

bales now line the street. city manager says daily city has spent half a million dollars to shore up that hillside. thousands of gallons of mud and water flowing into the streets below. crews have been working to replace soil washed away. they say the hillside is still being monitored around the clock. >> we will of course keep you updated on that. our storm watch coverage continues. we invite you to send in your clips and tips. meteorologist christina loren is tracking that wind and the rain. mike is monitoring your commute. they'll be back in just a few minutes. >> a storm of a different kind. this one in washington where some democratic senators are calling into an investigation into the gas spikes between may

and november. wanting to know what role oil refineries played in rising prices. gas in california jumped to more man $5 a gallon despite falling crude prices. analysts say a web of refinery problems including the fire at the richland chevron refinery were to blame. we promised christina would be along and what do you know, here she is, we deliver. >> good morning to you. yeah, we deliver. this storm system arrived on time this morning which means it's going to coincide with your morning drive. making for rough conditions. if you commute to work, we want you to keep in mind we've got more rain on the way and the storm system is just now push on shore. zoom in for you, show you where the heaviest pockets are coming down. half-moon bay is getting your first moderate to heavy rainfall. and steady rainfall. just about 15 to 20 minutes away from the entire peninsula. 19 minutes away from san mateo. and then as we head throughout

the latter portion of the morning, we will start to get a little bit a break but not until 11:00 a.m. late morning this morning. finally starting to drop off in intensity in terms of our showers. we've got two more systems to get through. five to six consecutive days of rain. we will get several breaks throughout the whole thing. i'm going to time that out for you in my next report. first, it's 5:37. we want to take a look at the drive. it is getting busy out there. >> yeah, it's pretty typical. it looks like maybe a little more, a few more folks out there. christy smith talked about this. she showed us the rain had come across the area. making her windshield wet enough to use the windshield wipe earps. we see some slowing. and some sheen on the roadways. even though it was a light drizzle, we got more coming and already some slicker conditions. watch for this as the volume builds here. the green overlay across that maze area shows you the chance for wet roads.

republicans meeting with top ceos, pushing their side of things. now, republicans also criticizing the president for a trip that he hasn't even taken yet. friday, he hits the road to take this message to pennsylvania, to a toy manufacture there, talkinging about how do we avoid the fiscal cliff. spending cuts and tax increases that go into effect at the end of this year in congress does nothing right now, behind the scenes. the negotiations, not a lot to report. >> tracie pots, thank you very much. checking on that rain. 5:43. the first of the storms rolling in. certainly packing a punch. we have a team in place watching the sky and roads for you. how's it looking there? >> good morning.

so far, so good, for one of the most dangerous highways in the entire state of california. traffic is starting to pick up as we approach the 6:00 hour. traffic heading over the hill into san jose. northbound 17 is picking up. but no problems to report. i've been checking with chp throughout the morning. so far, so good for their patrol cars. the wind is more of a problem atop the summit. we're about 1,800 feet up and the wind is picking up from time to time but still not too bad. not too bad but gusts expected between 30 to 40 miles an hour. what does this mean for you? if you have a high-profile vehicle, we're talking about suvs, tractor trailers. definitely hold on tight with both hands. because as you know, you are more prone to overturning. christina told us before we headed out here to the summit

this morning that the bulk of the rain for the santa cruise mountain suspected to hit between 8:00 and 10:00 this morning so we're still a couple hours away. live, marla it aess, "today in the bay." >> christina is here to tell us what's happening. >> it's getting busier and busier. the bulk of the moisture is still off shore at this point. we're expecting it to come through just in time for the morning rush. that's why we really want to make sure you're prepared. make sure they grab the rain gear. that's your sustained speed. earlier, we have reports of 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts. the wind we're talking about has not yet arrived. that's coming. the heaviest wind is expected about 9:00 and 11:00. then the wind should start to

taper off a bit. we still have two more storm systems to get through before we're done with the rain. your live doppler radar tells the story. most of the bay area starting to get wet. also, showers starting to push in the try valley at this point. san jose, still relatively dry. rain is on the way towards our neck of the woods. we're expecting the bulk of the moisture for the south bay between about 8:00 and 10:00 today. all of the city getting light to moderate rainfall. your highways are nice and slick just about everywhere. we stop the clock for you at 9:00 a.m. look at this band. this is what we're really concerned about. at 9:00 a.m., it starts to get very dicey. this is when your grounds are already saturated out there. we stop the clock for you again at 11:00 a.m. a little bit of a break, from santa rosa, even san francisco, having a very brief opportunity to dry out. it's not going to last long. another storm system on its

now be tried as an adult. he will be in court today, facing a list of charges, including murder, robbery and attempted murder of a peace officer. police say the man and a 26-year-old man robbed four businesses and killed a man during a car jacking. they also allegedly shot at a police officer. a san jose school bus driver being hailed as a hero this morning. bus driver wilma acosta saw flames shooting out of the engine. she went to the back of the bus where one student was in a wheelchair. she tried to lower the ramp but couldn't because the fire had knocked out the electronics. she carried the 95 pound middle school student off the bus to safety. >> the fire person in charge came up to me and said, you should consider your bus driver heroic. because of her actions today and

taking it upon herself to figure out a way to get the student off the bus. >> had to act quickly. the 12-year-old girl, a special needs student at bridges academy, was not hurt. firefighters arrived and they put out the flames in about five minutes. the school district and the san jose fire department now plan on recognizing acosta for saving that little girl's life. look at the flames on that, how fast she had to -- >> wilma, a true hero there. thank goodness. 5:50. the storm moving across the bay area. the roads, they'll be getting a lot wetter out there. >> maybe sort of a silly day to talk about solar power but we're gonna. looks pretty sunny ahead for that. welcome back, everyone. welcome back to the holidays. tonight, they will light up the rockefeller christmas tree. everything up and active already. 5:53. indeed. neither scott mcgrew nor i are meteorologists, but we figured today is probably not a great day to talk about solar power. but scott mcgrew says sunny skies are ahead for a bay area company. >> it's not just the skies that are misty this morning. so too is the market for ipos. yet the bay area's solar city hopes to jump into the ipo market next month. the company says it figures it can start selling shares around december 11th. it filed paperwork for the securities and exchange commission yesterday. now, it is company's run by this man, a south african immigrant named lyndon rye. interesting fellow. he sold cosmeticings in high school to make his first

fortune. created a software company for his second fortune. his cousin is the head of tesla motor cars. now, solar has been a problem lately. remember, solyndra. you don't want to be in the solar panel or solar cell manufacturing business. that's a disaster. the chinese have a glut of solar powers out there. so the money is in the installation business or more importantly the tax business. there are great tax breaks if you put up solar panels. solar city leases them. they're saying basically you rent the panels, benefit from lower utility bills and we'll benefit because we get your tax break. win-win-win. consumers, solar city and of course the environment. >> it's always interesting too because it's almost too good to believe it's true. >> there are salesman who say that all the time. who say, we will save you money and it won't cost you anything.

>> as you see on your radar, now we see on our cameras as well. here's the bay bridge toll plaza. we see the rain drops hitting the lens here. and the backup forming. so this is an issue now approaching. we'll likely see the slower drive across the bridge itself. the san mo taio bridge, windy conditions. watch those higher profile vehicles. that means the taller vehicles. just be careful. they get blown around. a live look outside. the north bay and some misty wet conditions. >> it is 5:57 right now. we have a live look at the bay bridge. the wind will be causing some problems. some gusting up to 50, 60 miles per hour. the coverage of the first of the three storms, we'll have that.
